How (not) to construct worlds with responsibility

چکیده

Abstract In a recent article, P. Roger Turner and Justin Capes argue that no one is, or ever was, even partly morally responsible for certain world-indexed truths. Here we present our reasons thinking their argument is unsound: It depends on the premise possible worlds are maximally consistent states of affairs, which under plausible assumptions concerning demonstrably false. Our to show this based Bertrand Russell’s original ‘paradox propositions’. We should then opt different approach explain truths whose upshot may be (at least partly) some them. The result effect there affairs independently interesting though, since notion motivates an account nature in metaphysics modality. also register response Capes, spirit aforementioned paradox many other versions thereof, proof claim set all true propositions can render

How to Construct Tetris Configurations

In this paper we show that every (reasonable) TETRIS configuration can be constructed from an initially empty game board using a suitable sequence of pieces. On game boards of even width a simple parity condition has to be fulfilled. The paper provides an explicit construction. This problem is connected to the NP-completeness of certain TETRIS related decision problems. INTRODUCTION It has rece...

Attributing Responsibility: Actual and Counterfactual Worlds

How do people attribute responsibility to individuals in a group? Several models in psychology predict that there is a close relationship between counterfactuals and responsibility: how responsible an individual’s contribution is seen depends on whether it made a difference to the outcome. We first review these models and then point out a major limitation: people sometimes hold individuals resp...

How to Construct Dense Objects with Self-Recondfigurable Robots

Self-reconfigurable robots can change their shape by rearranging the modules from which they are built. This self-reconfiguration process has proven difficult to control, because it involves control of a distributed system of autonomous, but mechanically coupled modules connected in time-varying ways. In this work we address this control problem and specifically look at how to construct dense c...

How to construct the perfect sandcastle

Just a bit of water enables one to turn a pile of dry sand into a spectacular sandcastle. Too much water however will destabilize the material, as is seen in landslides. Here we investigated the stability of wet sand columns to account for the maximum height of sandcastles. We find that the columns become unstable to elastic buckling under their own weight. This allows to account for the maximu...

How to Construct Curves Over Finite Fields With Many Points

This bound was proved for elliptic curves by Hasse in 1933. Ever since, the question of the maximum number Nq(g) of points on an irreducible curve of genus g over a finite field of cardinality q could have been investigated. But for a long time it attracted no attention and it was only after Goppa introduced geometric codes in 1980 that this question aroused systematic attention, cf. [G], [M], ...
